Analysis of Recent Journalistic Piece: Why Pxssy Palace are charging straight, cis men six times more

Original Article from Dazed: https://www.dazeddigital.com/life-culture/article/55361/1/why-pxssy-palace-are-charging-straight-cis-men-six-times-more

I chose to analyse this article as it covers a relatively nuanced subject on a mainstream platform, Dazed. Whilst giving a voice to Pxssy Palace, which consists of marginalised voices such as people of colour and LGBTQ+ people, it also highlights the backlash they receive from right-leaning organisations such as GB News and Daily Mail. This is a particularly interesting style of journalism to me as it showcases lesser-heard voices as well as debunking or further explaining points that other publications make.

The article begins with a description of the event, highlighting its benefit for disadvantaged social groups – ‘an oasis of calm, happiness and joy for LGBTQ+ and PoC communities in London’ – first establishing the personal effect the organisation has for those that it is aimed for. In my opinion this is extremely important for a journalistic piece, as it shows the publication’s respect for the communities they are speaking of, therefore demonstrating more objective and informative writing. Serena Smith, the writer of the article, then goes on to explain the tiered-cost entry system, emphasising that the ‘pricing scale is just a guide’ – thus putting down the critical comments written by other publications.

Sources used by Smith are also credible and come straight from the root of the event, citing Pxssy Palace’s website and further speaking to them in response to the scathing remarks made by GB news about the cis white male price increase. Overall, this article is very much the sort I’d like to emulate as it fairly shows different viewpoints on one subject, yet speaks to those that are most affected by the situation.
